Unnatural Landscapes
Director: Bernar Hébert/Producer: Ronald Rudin
Length: 22:30
Quebec, Canada, 2018
What is nature or natural? This is the question at the heart of Unnatural Landscapes that tells the story of the 32,000 hectares of marshlands in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia that for over three centuries have been protected from the tides of the Bay of Fundy by structures that allowed water to drain out to make farming possible. After World War II, these structures were in bad condition, leading the federal government to create the Maritime Marshland Rehabilitation Administration to reconstruct or replace them, sometimes succeeding and other time creating new environmental problems. Building on interviews with individuals with a variety of connections with the marshlands, the film encourages reflection on the legacy of the MMRA and on what it means for a landscape to be “natural.”
