The below videos were written and directed in 2008-2009 by the students of Priestman Street Elementary School under the guidance of music teacher Susan Hayward. The students chose a topic they felt was of social importance and began by writing the lyrics. Next each class set their lyrics to music composed by the class. Finally, the students brought in original photos or video clips and worked collaboratively to create a video. The purpose of this project was to explore musical composition, the power of music and the media in relaying concepts and to foster creativity, social awareness and a sense of agency and ownership in the students.

The Road To Peace - 4FM
This song was inspired by the students’ desire for peace in the world. It reflects their respect for friends and family who risked their lives making it possible for Canada to be peaceful. The photos of people are actual family members of the students in the class.

A War Story - 5BC
This video focused on the students mixed feelings of both pride and fear due to the situation in Afghanistan. The images came to us from a student who has a family member overseas.

Give Peace A Chance - 5V
After listening and discussing protest songs, such as John Lennon’s Imagine, the students attempted to re-create a chant like quality that would inspire others to their cause. All the artwork in this video are original student work.

Don’t Matter Megan Hill - 5BC
Megan Hill felt the topic of discrimination was too important to be overlooked and took this piece on as a personal project. The words were written by 5 BC. Megan created the music and recorded herself singing the song. Using the school cameras Megan shot the images and footage and then put them together into this poignant video.

Caught On A Chain - 5C
This video caught the eye of CARMA and the SPCA at The Catastrophic Event in the spring. The students tackled the topic of animal rights, animal care and chaining.

Out Of The Habitat - 4M
The students in 4M had just finished a unit on zoos and were adamant to have this piece reflect their feelings about caging animals and about removing them from their natural habitat. There was an extensive debate on the spelling of habitat resulting in a search of the dictionary, hence the “joke” in the title.

Paths - 4S
A Student commentary on friendship and the importance of choosing “paths” in life.
